How Tax Is Handled Across Systems

Overview

If you’re seeing tax discrepancies in Conjura reports, it’s often due to taxes being incorrectly configured or missing in the source system. We reflect what the system records - so missing or inconsistent values usually point to missing setup.

Here’s how VAT is handled in each system we support.

Shopify

  • Shopify can fully automate tax (VAT, GST, US sales tax), but only if merchants configure it correctly. This includes:

    • Registering for OSS or local tax

    • Destination-based tax rules

    • B2B VAT logic (reverse charge)

Where to Configure Tax in Shopify:

  1. Go to: Shopify Admin > Settings > Taxes and Duties

  2. Under Countries/Regions, click the relevant region (e.g. EU, US, Australia) or add a new one.

  3. For each region:

    • Add your tax registration number (VAT, GST, Sales Tax ID)

    • Enable Collect tax

    • Enable business logic (e.g. collecting tax IDs, applying exemptions) if applicable

    • Enable Automatically remove VAT for eligible business customers (activates reverse charge handling)

  4. Product setup

    • Go to Shopify Admin > Products > [Each Product]

    • Ensure Charge tax on this product is ticked

    • In Settings > Shipping and Delivery, ensure shipping rates are taxable if applicable

Shopify applies tax automatically at checkout based on this setup. If nothing is configured, no tax is collected - which is what Conjura will reflect.

BigCommerce

  • Supports tax calculation via manual tax zones/rates or through integrations with tools like Avalara.

  • Apps can handle tax ID collection, validation, and exemptions (e.g. Exemptify for VAT).

  • BigCommerce does not natively support global tax compliance platforms like OSS or B2B exemptions - these must be configured manually or via apps.

Brightpearl

  • Strong native tax support using tax codes per customer/product.

  • Tax registration and exemption logic must be configured manually.

  • Customers can be marked tax-exempt or assigned codes (e.g. reverse charge or zero-rated).

Linnworks

  • Tax rates are configurable per channel, product, or order.

  • Logic for exemption or reverse charge must be implemented manually (e.g. rules, scripts).

Amazon Seller Central

  • If using Amazon’s Tax Calculation Service:

    • Amazon calculates tax per jurisdiction, applies exemptions, and provides compliant invoicing.

    • Supports business buyer tax ID handling and exemptions where applicable.

  • If not enrolled, merchants must:

    • Include tax in prices manually

    • Handle reporting and compliance externally

Cin7

  • Supports tax-inclusive or exclusive pricing, tax profiles, and customer exemptions.

  • Merchants can assign tax rules per customer/channel, including business exemptions.

  • Tax registration and exemption logic must be configured manually.

Summary

Conjura surfaces the VAT amounts recorded in the source system. If tax appears missing or inconsistent, it’s usually due to incomplete tax setup in the platform. Each system supports VAT to varying degrees - but registration, configuration, and correct usage are the merchant’s responsibility.
